George Evans (Australian politician)

George Samuel Evans (3 June 1802 – 23 September 1868), was a barrister, editor and politician in New Zealand and colonial Australia.


one of the earliest English settlers in New Zealand and for some time a Minister of the Crown in Victoria (Australia).
==Early life==
Evans was admitted to the English Bar, and early became associated with the Wakefield colonisation schemes. He decided to go out with the first party of settlers to Wellington (Port Nicholson), New Zealand, under the auspices of Colonel William Wakefield, who had selected the site on Cook Straits in the previous year.
